It’s not every day that one of our favorite indie-pop duos calls us up and asks us to be a part of their new music video. So when we got the call from Tegan and Sara’s people, we jumped at the chance! The result? A super colourful treat for the eyes, with a mega-catchy tune as the soundtrack. We asked Tegan and Sara a little about the inspo for their song and video. Get the scoop from the ladies themselves and make sure to check out the video at the bottom of the page!
1. First all of, major fangirling over here. You’ve got an office full of fans at butter LONDON! Tell us a little bit about your new album.
Love You To Death is our 8th album. We feel like it’s the most “Tegan and Sara” feeling album we’ve made. We collaborated a lot with each other (which we don’t typically do). Our biggest goal was marrying the depth, emotional rawness and intensity of earlier records with the pop sound of our last record Heartthrob. We wanted 10 strong songs. The record is for a start to finish listen. We hope people drive, dance, lay in the dark and run to it!
2. What inspired you to write Stop Desire?
I was contemplating the concept of wanting someone else when you have everything you have ever wanted. Questioning my life and my relationship. Things like “can I love and desire the same person” type stuff. I also just wanted another fun make out / lets get it on song like Closer or Drove Me Wild.
3. We love the colour palette in the video! What sources did you look to for inspiration?
We always try and do something new with each video. Possibly against our better judgement we committed to make 10 videos (1 for each song on the new record). So we are really pushing ourselves to partner with creatives who can bring something new to each video. Allister was able to create a whole new look for us with Stop Desire, inline with our creative designer Emy’s color palette for the record artwork and merchandise. Allister and I talked a lot about Wes Anderson in our first meeting.
Sara and I loved the idea the tight vignettes and quirky sexuality that Alister wrote into her first treatment. She found a way to create 4 unique worlds in the video. The amount of work/planning that she put into designing the background of each extra and location is stunning. It’s by far one of the strongest videos we have made. We can take very little credit for it. Allister is a genius.
4. Let’s talk grooming. You guys have some serious looks on the cover of your album. What’s your day-to-day routine like?
In my late 20’s I started to finally see the benefit to taking care of my skin. I wash my face every morning with a Kiehl’s oil free cleanser, than use Witch hazel pads to remove any excess dirt. I use resurfacing pads from Malin and Goetz in the morning and their night cream before bed. I wash my face twice a day like this. In addition to that routine, the big thing for me is drinking tons of water, eating tons of greens, staying away from sweets when I can and using sunblock. I also try not to wear any make up when I’m not working and wash my face the second I’m done doing a photo shoot.
