As we all know, makeup and hair go together like peanut butter and jelly. We are so thrilled celebrity hairstylist and creator of the Beachwaver, Sarah Potempa, let us grill her about hair–so we can keep our manes brilliantly tame throughout the summer!
Being a celebrity hair stylist, you must be up and running constantly! What’s your typical beauty routine for a busy day?
I love to use our new Beachwaver S1.25 to create big, loose waves. By taking larger sections to curl, you’ll get beautiful, relaxed waves. It’s also great because the ceramic barrel helps to smooth your hair and makes it look polished, even if it is a busy day. While my curls are cooling, I’ll apply a tinted moisturizer, some highlighter, mascara, and a pink lip. Once I’m finished with my makeup and the curls are cool, I’ll spray a flexible hairspray onto our On Set Styling Brush and brush through the curls to make gorgeous waves.
How did you come up with the concept for the Beachwaver?
After continually explaining the complex process to get beachy waves to editors, I knew there had to be an easier way. I sat down and sketched the idea for the Beachwaver, the first ever rotating curling iron. With my sisters and a team of engineers, we spent two years researching and developing the Beachwaver. In early 2012, we launched the Beachwaver® PRO. The response was incredible and the Beachwaver® PRO quickly became the favorite tool of beauty editors, stylists’ go-to, and the perfect tool the everyday women! We now have the Beachwaver S series as well, including our two new sizes, the Beachwaver S.75 and Beachwaver S1.25.
Can you give us some tricks for the perfect, undone waves?
Leave more of the end out when you’re curling. When you take a section of hair, take a 2″ section of hair and leave 3″ or more out at the end when clamping. After you curl it, as soon as you release the curl, run your fingers through it. You’ll be left with the perfect, undone wave!
What’s your best kept beauty secret?
I spray a flexible hold hairspray directly onto the brush and then brush through my beachwaves. It helps to smooth any flyaways and then also evenly distributes the hairspray throughout the waves.
What’s your favorite, no fuss summer hairstyle?
I love to create a braid with second-day beachwaves. The beachwaves with add texture and volume to the braid, and it’s a quickfix for the warm weather.
